The challenge
The company has run Foundation since 2010. It handles job costing and the construction-specific accounting the team relies on, and its standard reports export to PDF or Excel. Getting anything beyond those reports meant querying the database directly, a skill Foundation teaches in a two-and-a-half-day course.
The CFO had taken that course and built a weekly dashboard from Excel queries, pivot tables and a macro. It worked, but because the data was confidential, only he could change the parameters and run it. Adding a new line, such as subcontractor costs, meant rewriting queries and rebuilding the macro.
Other routine work was just as manual. Checking the daily cash position took nine steps inside Foundation. A team member reviewed past-due invoices by hand, highlighted them in a PDF and sent them to project managers. The monthly profit-share accrual meant pulling the same payroll report over and over and retyping figures from one screen into another.
